Easier Worship Songs For The Congregation To Sing
As a worship team turns away from the idea that they are there to entertain the congregation and starts to focus on enabling the congregation to participate in the worship experience, they will truly become true worship leaders for the congregation. This will of course result in some changes in the songs that are chosen for the worship services. Easy worship songs are congregation friendly.
After a couple of short conversations with a worship pastor and expressing my concerns to him about getting the congregation more involved, I have come to realize that the congregation needs to be taught songs they can easily learn.... those that have a more predictable flow of melody and not the complicated ones that bounce around in the notes and use up beats and syncopation and thus are complicated and hard for the congregation to learn.
Here is a perfect example of an easy worship song with a predictable flow of melody: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5L6QlAH3L4
I sang this song at a church not far from home, and was able to practice it using Youtube on the Saturday preceding the Sunday it was sung because the worship leader there sends me the Sunday worship songs if I ask him. In practicing it, I experienced such an ease in learning it that I wondered if I had sung it before but then realized it was too new. I realized that it's "easiness to learn" is the reason I thought I had sung it before. It is written with congregation in mind.
You will notice that this song has a flow of melody that is easy to catch onto and even when the flow changes, it changes to a flow that is also predictable and easy to learn. This aspect of the song makes it easy to learn which is important for the congregation so they can be more involved in worship service participation.
Some worship songs are better for soloists because they are so complicated. These songs should be minimized because they bounce around in the notes and thus are hard for the congregation to learn. They are not conducive in getting the congregation involved in participatory worship. So these songs should be used sparingly and the easy worship songs can be maximized to enable the congregation.
