Spiritual Songs - Songs From The Spirit Of The Lord
There are those who are specially gifted at times during worship with songs from the Lord through which they praise the Lord and at the same time they minister teaching and admonishment to others. "Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts." Colossians 3:16 - New International Version
In another letter the apostle tells us how to party and have a good time in the Lord: "Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." Ephesians 5:18 -20 - New International Version Bible.
I have known about these verses for years, but because I had the popular Christian melody from many years ago memorized from the King James version of the Bible for Eph. 5:19-20, I did not see that the Apostle is telling us to use singing of hymns, psalms, and spiritual songs as a way to preach to and teach other believers we are in close contact with. I thought that the apostle was telling us to sing to ourselves when we are working around the house or out for a walk or in our quite time etc. If you look at the King James version you will see what I mean.
I know a drummer who is part of the worship team of that church with extended worship that I have mentioned in various pages on this website. I have heard Brian give some of the most beautiful songs from the Spirit of the Lord during worship practice. During worship when the presence of the Lord grew strong in worship he would receive a song from the
Lord and it would just flow out of him. The words and the melody were inspired by the Spirit of the Lord and it would minister such encouragement and edification to everyone there.
I recently did a short interview with Brian, the drummer, and I asked him how he received the beautiful songs he would sing. He told me he would start the song and then trust the Lord to give him the words and the melody. I would like to interject here that I believe the Lord gave him the idea to start the song in the first place. This Bible verse comes to mind: "For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit" (2 Peter 1:21). Brian was carried along by the Holy Spirit as God formed the words and melody in Brian as he stepped out in faith.
